Community Formation

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
– Micah 6:8

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
– Matthew 5:16

The Lord had said to Abram,“Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
– Genesis 12:1-3

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
– Matthew 25:35-36

Family Ministry

Hope Fellowship (Nozomi No Kai)

A ministry to our elders that meets on Wednesday and Friday mornings where they hear and experience the Good News of Jesus through worship, fellowship, bible study, excursions, and the sharing of faith stories in an
environment of loving support and encouragement of the spirit.

Project Dorcas

Caring for those who are limited in mobility and unable to come to church, Project Dorcas is a team of volunteers who bring the love of the church to shut-ins by delivering a meal or helping with simple chores.

We offer new members a mentor who can help answer any questions they may have and introduce them to the fellowship of our church.

Sunday School classes are held Sundays between the first and second English language services, using specially screened program materials to provide our children from Grade K through 12 with the basics of their faith.

Discipleship Hour

Our Discipleship Hour features videos on a variety of current topics followed by a period of group discussion to learn how we can live a Biblically-based lifestyle in today’s world.

The Rev. Theodore T. Ogoshi Memorial Archives

We house a treasure of historical resources dating back to the beginning of The Rev. Takie Okumura’s ministry in Hawaii in the late 1800s. These resources have been invaluable for those researching the Japanese Christian movement among the early immigrants.

Thursday Volunteers

Our team of volunteers gather each Thursday morning to help with various light chores and end the morning by sitting down together for a home-cooked lunch. It’s a great time to enjoy each other’s company!

Rainbow Connection

Our link to the city of Kochi, Japan where The Rev. Takie Okumura originated from gives us a special opportunity to extend the love and friendship of Christ. Each year, we host a number of students from Tosa Juku and other middle schools who come to Hawaii for a memorable one-week trip. Many lives have been changed by this annual exchange.

Next Steps Shelter

Makiki Christian Church is one of many organizations that participate in the opportunity to prepare and serve a special meal to our brothers and sisters at Kaka’ako’s Next Step Shelter where people live temporarily while getting their lives back in order. It is an honor and privilege for us to do so because we are able to put God’s love into action.

Oyako Kai

Each week, our church hosts a gathering of Japanese-speaking mothers and their young children for a time of fun and relaxation. Many are Japanese citizens whose spouses are employed in Hawaii.

Operation Christmas Child

Our annual Christmas project calls our members to contribute a shoebox filled with necessities and goodies for the purpose of bringing Christmas joy to a child overseas whom otherwise would not receive a gift. These anonymous gifts come delivered with a message that Jesus Christ loves them. We are thankful to be an annual participant of this wonderful international ministry.

MCC Prison Ministry Video Conferencing

Makiki Christian Church is a video host site for families of Hawaii-based inmates incarcerated on the mainland to talk with their loved ones. Our goal is to make this limited time each month as meaningful and comfortable as possible by creating a welcoming environment and offering our hospitality through childcare and light refreshments.
